Let’s get to know more about Dementia

Dementia is a brain defect in thinking, including the ability to perceive, remember, make decisions, think and plan management, including speaking or concentration. This disorder affects social interactions and daily life.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia.

Symptoms of the disease begin with forgetting something general such as familiar words, the location of everyday objects, etc until it worsens. Some patients may not be able to talk to anyone or respond to their surroundings, which can greatly affect their daily lives.

Alzheimer’s disease is divided into 3 stages:

1. Early-stage Alzheimer’s
At this stage, there may only be some forgetfulness or confusion, such as forgetting a conversation that just took place, forgetting where you put things, forgetting the name of a person or place, doing the same thing repeatedly.

2. Middle-stage Alzheimer’s
At this stage, the symptoms begin getting worse, such as starting to take longer to do daily activities, inability to learn new things, and communication problems, including sometimes being paranoid or having difficulty sleeping

3. Late-stage Alzheimer’s
During this stage, the symptoms of the disease will be more severe. It will have a huge impact on others since patients need to be cared for and need help at all times. For example, the patient will experience hallucinations that cause trust issues, seizures, and gradually losing the ability to speak until unable to communicate.

Causes of Alzheimer’s disease
Age is the most important factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Elderly people over 65 years of age are twice as likely to develop the disease. Genetics is another cause of Alzheimer’s disease as well, including people who have experienced severe head injuries.

Alzheimer’s disease treatment
Currently, there is no way to cure it completely. There is only care that helps alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Let’s test for dementia using scent.

From now on, we would like to present a simple smell test that will help indicate your risk of dementia. Keep in mind that the sense of smell is closest to the part of the brain, so it’s a reason why scent can indicate brain disease. The research “Testing the risk of dementia from smelling 5 scents” began by letting participants smell and identify 5 scents one by one, including peppermint, fish, orange, rose, and leather. Peppermint is the easiest scent to identify, and leather is the hardest to identify. The result found that participants correctly identified at least 4 of the 5 scents. There are 7% correctly identified 2 – 3 scents, 2.2% correctly identified only one scent out of the total, and 1% unable to identify all 5 scents. After 5 years, participants will return for testing again. The result indicated that participants who were unable to identify 4 out of 5 scents were 80 percent more likely to have dementia.

Next, we will introduce the scents that help treat the quality of sleep in elderly people with dementia. Since dementia affects sleep and makes it more difficult, so aromatherapy is used to treat disease. Inhaling essential oils for 5 minutes before bed every day will help with sleep. The scent that helps make sleeping easier is the scent of lavender which helps you relax to sleep better. Therefore, it is used in patients with dementia because the brain has a direct connection to smell. For this reason, the scent is popularly used to treat patients with brain problems such as Alzheimer’s disease or mental illness. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease, loss of ability to smell has been found earliest. Therefore, aromatherapy will help with sleep and restore short-term memory and good memories from the past.
